Sangeet Som Targets Shah Rukh Khan Over KKR’s Signing of Bangladeshi Cricketer Mustafizur Rahman

BJP leader Sangeet Som targets Shah Rukh Khan and KKR over signing Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman at the IPL 2026 auction, sparking political and public debate amid rising tensions.

Shah Rukh Khan and Mustafizur Rahman

The IPL 2026 auction has stirred up disputes that go well beyond cricket, as Sangeet Som, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a legislator of Uttar Pradesh, attacked the Bollywood star and co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Shah Rukh Khan, right after the franchise had bought the Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman for ₹9.2 crore. Som’s comments have sparked discussions in the realms of politics and society, bringing to the forefront the diplomatic friction between India and Bangladesh and the combination of sports, nationalism, and public mood.

The Political Backlash Against KKR’s Decision

Sangeet Som was very critical of Shah Rukh Khan and KKR’s decision to draft Mustafizur Rahman into their team at an event intended for the public in Meerut. He condemned the decision and accused the actor of giving up the national feeling. “No place for traitors,” proclaimed Som when he claimed that such decisions as hiring a Bangladeshi player were “out of touch with the national sentiment” and were intolerable in the present situation. His words escalated the focus on what was normally just a cricket auction decision.

Nationalism, Cricket, and Rising Diplomatic Sensitivities

Som’s critique has a context of increased diplomatic and cultural frictions between India and Bangladesh, mainly because of the recent reports signalling violence against minorities in Bangladesh, the neighboring country. His comments echoed a few factions that have staged protests against Indian sports leagues accepting players from Bangladesh. The BJP politician brought up other provocative statements and activities that have occurred in the past few months, and he depicted the matter not merely as a cricket decision but as one related to national pride and security.

Support and Opposition in Public Reactions

Som’s stance elicited various reactions on social media and public discussions. There were those, among the users, who supported him by raising the same issue and claiming that the signing of a player from a country that is not favorably seen by some part of the society would be sending out the wrong signal, particularly in the current politically sensitive times. On the contrary, others were very firm in their response, saying that global talent is a common feature in international cricket leagues and that the criticism of Shah Rukh Khan in relation to a team management decision is unwarranted. A lot of people talked about how the sport’s success and popularity always depend on inclusiveness and talent regardless of the players’ nationalities.

Spiritual Leaders Join the Controversy

The political drama was further increased when religious figure Devkinandan Thakur condemned the IPL’s inclusion of Rahman, asking the KKR management to think again about their choice and threatening repercussions if the player still played for the team. The controversy was thus intensified since the comments mixed up religious and political feelings with sports conversations, and discussions in different media, both traditional and digital, became even more intense.

KKR and Shah Rukh Khan Yet to Respond

At this point, neither Shah Rukh Khan nor the management of KKR has issued a public statement regarding the criticism directed at them. The BCCI hasn’t made a comment either, and there isn’t an official prohibition against Bangladeshi players in the IPL. Nevertheless, along with increasing political scrutiny and some groups loudly speaking against it, Mustafizur Rahman’s joining the IPL season next summer could easily turn into a discussion among cricket lovers and even political analysts.
