Bollywood celebrity Ranveer Singh issued an apology following extensive negative feedback for his reenactment of a scene from the movie Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 during IFFI in Goa, which is the International Film Festival of India’s closing event. He wrote on Instagram that he only meant to celebrate Rishab Shetty’s acting and that he did not want to hurt anyone. He also acknowledged and respected all cultures and traditions and apologized sincerely to those who got offended by his behavior.

On Tuesday morning, Ranveer took to Instagram and wrote a note of apology on Stories. It said, “My intention was to highlight Rishabh’s incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration.”

What Triggered the Controversy

The dispute started when Ranveer lauded Rishab Shetty’s acting in Kantara, especially a climactic moment with a “Daiva,” a god in Tulu mythology. He called the god a “female ghost” on the stage and went on to act out the scene with exaggerated gestures. At first, Shetty only smiled during the performance, but people on social media considered it a huge insult to the culture. This was because a lot of people felt that performing the sacred ritual, particularly while wearing shoes, was disrespectful.

Rishab Shetty’s Warning

According to sources, Rishab Shetty had previously advised Ranveer not to perform the Daiva scene imitation prior to the function. However, not listening to the warning, Ranveer, of course, did the act, which escalated the criticism. The critics on the internet went to the extent of saying that combining a religious belief with the mimicry of such a degree was really disrespectful and a breach of the cultural barrier.

Timing and Public Reaction

Ranveer’s new movie Dhurandhar is just a few days away from release, and this incident has happened recently. Fans and critics pointed out that such issues might create a negative atmosphere for the movie’s promotion. The issue also led to broader conversations about the treatment of regional beliefs in pan-Indian cinema.

Importance of Cultural Sensitivity

This episode underscores the responsibility of public figures in handling cultural and spiritual content. Even if an act is intended as a tribute, misunderstanding or misrepresentation can easily lead to offense. It raises questions about respecting local traditions while engaging with a broader, national audience in the entertainment industry.

This incident highlights the duty of the public personalities in the handling of the cultural and spiritual materials. Even if the act is meant to honor, misunderstanding or misrepresentation can quickly change the situation to an offense. It opens up a debate about the necessity of local customs’ being respected in the process of connecting to a wider audience.
