The new web series Mrs Deshpande, starring Madhuri Dixit and directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, delivers compelling moments but struggles with narrative pacing and predictability, making it a mixed watch.

Mrs Deshpande steps into the realm of crime thrillers that are characterized by the presence of one of the most adored Indian film actresses, Madhuri Dixit, in a non-glamorous and frightening new character. The six-part series that can be watched on JioHotstar is based on the French series La Mante and tells the story of a famous serial killer who is getting the police’s help to find the murderer who is copying him and making Mumbai frightened. The main idea of the story is very suitable for creating a powerful cat-and-mouse narrative, and the theme of an imprisoned criminal helping law enforcement brings the emotional and psychological tension with it.

Madhuri Dixit’s Intense Turn Anchors the Series

Madhuri Dixit’s acting is considered to be the base of Mrs. Deshpande, and she gives a performance full of depth and subtlety to a character that is very distant from her glamorous past ones. Her work uncovers a complicated person whose emotions are hidden in a calm exterior and who has an unpredictable and dangerous mind. Even with the plot being weak at times, critics say that Dixit’s power to draw the viewer’s attention is one of the main points of the series and that her subtle performance keeps the audience involved. The actress, apart from her acting, also did her own stunts, as she refused to use a body double and thus made her role more authentic and physically challenging.

Narrative Struggles and Familiar Tropes Weigh Down the Story

While the main character is performing very well, Mrs. Deshpande still draws negative comments for aspiring too much to the traditional crime genre and not being very renewing in that respect. Sometimes the story moves too slowly through repetitive scenes and twists that can be anticipated; thus, the suspense is weakened. Reviewers refer to the series as inconsistent, with the times that are really fascinating quickly turning to boring as the plot goes on. Sometimes flashbacks that are thought to be making the story more touching end up being too explanatory instead of providing the viewer with an insight, and the writer has not created the sharp tension that is usually associated with a thrill. All these aspects together result in a film or series that is not as captivating as it could have been.

Supporting Cast and Direction Add Some Value

With Dixit, Pryanshu Chatterjee and Siddharth Chandekar are also there with their solid performances as police team members, which add even more layers to the investigation as it unfolds. Director Nagesh Kukunoor, who is famous for consistently offering nail-biting projects in the past, creates such an eerie and tense atmosphere in a few of the sequences that, however, his work does not bring the series out of its structural problems. The show’s effort to reconcile psychological depths of the characters with the procedural drama creates a split, leaving the spectators on one hand attracted to the individual scenes and on the other hand discontented by the lack of unity in the whole picture.

Verdict: A Watchable but Uneven Thriller

Mrs. Deshpande finally settles down as an uneven but viewable series. The premise, which has drawn much interest, and Madhuri Dixit’s daring portrayal are enough reasons to at least watch it, mainly for the people who love psychological crime dramas. Nevertheless, the sluggish pace, dainty storytelling, and frequent use of genre clichés stop the series from being a clear winner among the many in the already filled OTT market. The show sometimes brings forth tension and delves into characters’ lives, yet it does not get to the fullest of the potential that its captivating setup gives.
