Chandrika Tandon

Indian-origin Chandrika Tandon won her first Grammy award for her album ‘Triveni’ at the 67th Grammy Awards. Why some of you might be learning about her today, Chandrika Tandon has a commendable history in the world of music, especially for her classical Indo-fusion creations.

An Indian by birth and American by citizenship, Tandon completed her academic education at Madras Christian College and a master’s from IIM, or Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.

Her exceptional academic record and business judgment led to her selection at McKinsey & Company as a partner. She was the first woman of Indian-American heritage to become a partner at the prestigious firm, opening doors for her to become a global business leader.

However, how did such an accomplished business leader come to music and solidify her place in the musical world? Her passion for Indian music stems from her upbringing in a Chennai-based middle-class family where music was an integral part.

From an early age, she was taught about Samaveda, where music is an essential part of the teachings. Chandrika came in contact with different classical music like Carnatic music, along with Vedic chants. She solidified her musical standing with teachings from renowned artist Girish Wazalwar and Shubhra Guha.

Tandon got her first Grammy nomination in 2011 for her album ‘Soul Call.’ In 2024 she won her first Grammy for ‘Triveni’ under the Best New Age Ambient category or Chant Album category. The album is a major collaboration between Japanese cellist, Eru Matsumoto and South African flautist, Wouter Kellerman to create a contenporary musical Vedic chant album containing seven tracks.

As per Tandon this album brings ‘inner healing’ for listeners and thus lighting the fire within us. A remarkable feat of Chandrika Tandon’s exceptional musical and professional journey that got her a Grammy at last. Ending her speech, Tandon said, “Music is love, music ignites the light within all of us, and, even in our darkest days, music spreads joy and laughter.”
