At the 70th Filmfare Awards held in Ahmedabad, Arijit Singh won the award for Best Male Playback Singer after his mesmerizing singing of Sajni (from Laapataa Ladies). With this win, Arijit has now collected 8 Filmfare Awards — equal to the record of the great Kishore Kumar.
Tying the legend: Kishore Kumar
The analogy of Kishore Kumar has always been looming and tonight the comparison was finally made. It is not only a matter of accomplishment but rather proving how much the voice of Arijit has been accepted by all the generations.
Arijit Singh’s 7 Filmfare Wins Before Sajni
Arijit Singh had already won seven Filmfare Awards before breaking the record with Sajni, which were major achievements in his career. His rise started with Tum Hi Ho (Aashiqui 2, 2014), then came Sooraj Dooba Hain (Roy, 2016), Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Title Track (2017), Roke Na Ruke Naina (Badrinath Ki Dulhania, 2018), Ae Watan (Raazi, 2019), Kalank Title Track (2020), and Kesariya (Brahmastra, 2023). Each song represented a different phase of his artistry—love and longing, power and patriotism—helping to establish his reputation as the top singer of the current era.
A victory for Sajni and Laapataa Ladies
Although the headlines were dominated by Arijit’s performance, Laapataa Ladies was the film that ruled the night, receiving large awards such as Best Film and numerous technical accolades. It won 13 Filmfare awards across several categories, a record shared with Gully Boy (2019). The movie’s soundtrack was partly attributable to Arijit’s Sajni, and tonight that aspect of the film was brought to its rightful place.
