A collage of blockbusters: Kantara’s Rishab Shetty in flames, Baahubali’s warriors, and Sultan’s Salman Khan & Anushka in a wrestling pose, showcasing epic intensity

From day one, Kantara: Chapter 1 had its eyes set on the stars – and it’s now landed among them. The film has smashed a staggering ₹655+ crore worldwide by Day 12, overtaking Salman Khan’s Sultan (2016) and SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) in the process.

Domestic Surge & the Day-12 Dip

On its second Monday (Day 12), Kantara saw a drop in its India collections, earning ₹13.50 crore net — a 64 % fall from Sunday’s ₹39.75 crore.Despite that, the film’s domestic net total has crossed ₹451.90 crore, with a gross India collection of around ₹542 crore. Also the drop is also not a concern due to the weekend.

Overseas Strength & Global Footprint

Kantara’s overseas run has been impressive, particularly in North America, where it has grossed over $11 million. According to the film makers, its second weekend alone pulled in ₹146 crore gross, enhancing global totals to cross the ₹650-crore milestone.

Record Smash: Surpassing Legends

This record is even more remarkable considering Kantara’s relatively low budget and regional origins. The film now ranks among the top 20 highest-grossing Indian films ever, crossing over giants like Sultan (₹628 crore) and Baahubali (₹650 crore). It’s also the second-highest grosser in India in 2025, trailing only Chhaava.

Profit Mysteries & Industry Speculation

However, some trade analysts argue that, despite its box office success, Kantara may not yet be profitable for all stakeholders, citing high distribution costs and a high break-even threshold due to a huge hype before its release. Still, the film’s wide appeal across multilingual dub versions along with its pan-India success expresses its scale and ambition. Though it hasn’t earned as expected, it’s still a profitable venture for its producers  both in critical and commercial arenas.
