The recent release of Jab Khuli Kitaab on Zee5 unites veteran actors Pankaj Kapur and Dimple Kapadia to present a mature romantic drama that shows how senior citizens deal with marriage and their hidden troubles and their divorce process. The film shows an interesting premise but fails to show all its emotional depth at times, according to critics.
A Story About Love, Secrets, and Divorce After Decades
The film Jab Khuli Kitaab, which Saurabh Shukla directs, tells the story of Gopal Chandra Nautiyal, who is portrayed by Pankaj Kapur, and his wife, Anusuya (Dimple Kapadia). The story takes an unexpected turn when Anusuya wakes up from a coma and reveals a long-buried secret from her past to her husband. The confession shocks Gopal and triggers a sudden demand for divorce, which creates a family drama that examines trust and betrayal together with the vulnerability of relationships that last for many years.
The couple hides their relationship problems from their family, which includes their two sons Param and Dholu and their daughter-in-law Farnaaz and son Jignesh. The family has difficulty understanding the abrupt conflicts that occur between the two elders who used to be affectionate toward each other.
"Jab Khuli Kitaab is a sweet, breezy film which lacks necessary depth. It doesn’t get into the complexities of relationships and is content with floating on the surface," writes @kitkitcritic in his review of #jabkhulikitaab https://t.co/H8M4asrXEH

A Marriage Crisis That Shakes the Entire Family
The couple’s conflict becomes more difficult to resolve because their extended family members do not understand the sudden relationship problems that emerged between two people who previously displayed deep love for each other. Gopal wants to end his marriage, so he consults lawyer RK Negi, who is portrayed by Aparshakti Khurana, to start divorce procedures. The family faces multiple challenges as they attempt to handle the situation, which has resulted from the couple’s battle over their 50-year marriage and their hidden feelings and their shared life history.
#JabKhuliKitaab Nauheed Cyrusi (Farnaaz) is lovely and it’s a pleasure to see her after a hiatus. Samir Soni (Param) has a crucial role and he leaves a mark. Sunil Palwal (Jignesh) and Devyani Ratanpal (Sujata) are decent https://t.co/hsfbx3shJJ

A Promising Premise That Doesn’t Fully Deliver
The film starts with an interesting concept that investigates whether elderly people should stay married or choose to divorce, but critics contend that the film fails to investigate this theme sufficiently. The screenplay tries to show forgiveness and aging and family relationships through its characters, but most of the emotional battles stay at the basic level. The story contains key moments that should provide strong emotional impact, but they come across as fast-paced and basic, which leads to the story losing its complete dramatic potential. Adri Thakur created cinematography that shows the hills in a beautiful way that brings visual comfort to viewers. The music by Ritanaya Banerjee, however, is not particularly memorable.
Performances That Keep the Film Engaging
The film presents its storytelling limitations, yet the lead actors deliver outstanding performances throughout the entire movie. Pankaj Kapur plays Gopal as a headstrong character who shows his inner emotional pain through his quiet performance, and Dimple Kapadia brings both dignity and emotional depth to her portrayal of Anusuya. The two actors display romantic chemistry, which creates a warm atmosphere for the movie and maintains the film’s emotional core during its less successful moments. Aparshakti Khurana plays the role of a quirky lawyer who handles the case and creates humorous moments throughout the story.

A Gentle Family Drama With Mixed Reception
Overall, Jab Khuli Kitaab presents its unique love story about an elderly couple who face their first marriage crisis after they learn a life-altering secret about each other. The film establishes vital questions that examine how truth and forgiveness and companionship evolve during old age, but critics view the work as a superficial study of these themes. The film creates a positive viewing experience through its warm atmosphere and the natural connection between its main actors, which appeals to audiences who want to watch a light family drama on OTT platforms.
