Ek Deewane ki Deewaniyat Review: A Tale of Possessive Romance Between Two Problematic People

Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa star in this overtly loud and melodramatic masala romance.

Ek Deewane ki Deewaniyat Movie Review

Ek Deewane ki Deewaniyat (EDKD) takes a plunge into the tempestuous love affair of two imperfect personalities, Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa, who are the lead pair of the film. This film attempts to tackle numerous themes like love, obsession, heartbreak, passion, and jealousy at a time but ends up just being an exhausting as well as uncomfortable narrative to watch.

Performances That Carry the Film

Harshvardhan Rane as Vikramaditya is full of dark colours and deep shades as the obsessive lover who enjoys nice and dark at the same time. In her turn, Sonam as Adaa gives a performance that is both lively and nuanced for a woman standing between love and her own freedom. Their chemistry, even though struggles because of the sluggish making of the film, yet it still remains one of the strongest points of this overall weak film.

Sachin Khedekar and Anant Mahadevan, in supporting roles, also lend good aid.

Direction and Masala Elements

Milap Milan Zaveri, the director, tries to engage in masala entertainment, offering the audience a forced blend of music, drama, and visuals. He is desperate to manage love, madness, and heartbreak at the same time. But most of the time, he fails miserably. The film, however, is a bit unable to keep up its narrative pace with many hitches in its storytelling, particularly in its romanticisation of obsession. His direction and masala elements in the script feel outdated and somewhat very loud.

Music and Visual Appeal

The melodramatic storytelling is very well supported by the soundtrack, which contains love songs that amplify the emotional peaks, and accompanying music, which makes the scenes thrilling. The cinematography records the characters’ lives both in the glamour and on the hard side, thus the visual attraction is kept shiny even though the plot has darker hints. These two departments, along with the performances, somehow save the day for EDKD.

Problematic Portrayal of Romance

The film glorifies acts of obsession and possessiveness romantically, and some viewers will likely find this aspect disturbing. The leads’ toxic characteristics are very much a part of the plot and, therefore, question the film’s stance on the matter of unhealthy relationships. The portrayal of romance in the film is highly made for a certain age group of audience, especially for the teens and recent adults.

Over-the-Top Melodrama

The film is frank about it being masala-cinema, and still, there are moments when the drama is over-the-top and the emotional roller-coaster does at times take away from the character development. As a result, certain emotional moments appear to be forced rather than coming naturally.

Mixed Fan Reactions

Moviegoers’ reactions ranged from one extreme to the other- there were those who praised the extreme chemistry between the two main actors, Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa, and the audacious storytelling, while others were very critical of the film’s representation of obsessive love and its inclination to romanticise toxic behaviour.

Final Verdict: A New-Age Romance with Hiccups for Targeted Takers

EDKD is by no means an old-school classic love story, but its depiction of possessive affection, along with the leading actors’ strong performances and bright masala technique, perhaps makes it a good watch for the viewers of a specific age bracket. The film displays flawed characters in their intensity and, thus, is a divisive yet captivating journey, but the overlong film won’t go along with many people.

Ek Deewane ki Deewaniyat is strictly for the audience of a certain age group. Its intentional melodramatic treatment of obsessive love sometimes works and sometimes falters.
