The IPL (Indian Premier League) season started this Saturday with a bang with a massive crowd of lakhs and a viewership of millions to watch the KKR VS. RCB match in Eden Gardens, Kolkata. However, everything didn’t go as smoothly as you would expect in a massive annual event like IPL.
The opening ceremony of IPL 2025 is a massive crowd magnet due to celebrities’ and cricketers’ attendance. This year we saw Shah Rukh Khan and Virat Kohli shake a leg to SRK’s Pathaan song ‘Jhoome Jo Pathaan,’ and the crowd went ballistic. However, during the same opening ceremony, a massive blunder occurred when Disha Patani’s performance was cut halfway through the broadcast.
Hotstar Cut Disha Patani’s Performance Midway
The crowd attending the KKR VS. RCB match in Eden Garden got to see the Bollywood actress Disha Patani give a stunning performance live however the broadcast counterpart couldn’t. Television viewers were irked, to say the least during the opening ceremony when Disha Patani’s act was cut short midway. Several actors, singers, and dancers are known to perform on stage during the opening ceremony of IPL before the first match.
Similar to the Half Time Show in the USA’s Super Bowl, people look forward to the performances of celebrities in the IPL opening event. This year celebs like SRK, Shreya Ghoshal, Karan Aujla, Rinku Singh, and Virat Kohli of RCB performed on-stage during the opening ceremony. Hence, people were all pumped to watch the opening ceremony and the match that followed, KKR VS. RCB.
However, disappointment mounted among broadcast viewers when a performance was cut short half way. Patani’s performance was midway when broadcast shifted to commentary about the upcoming match that was yet to start.
Fans Throw Shade At JioHotstar Owners
The sudden cut in the broadcast of Disha Patani’s performance directed fans to take matters to the internet. A fan wrote, “Disha Patani was fine until Jio Hotstar remembered their relatives might be watching. Instant cultural awakening! They stopped the broadcast mid-stream.” while another fan wrote, “Bhai Disha Patani ki performance puri koi dm kr dena. (Brother, someone please DM me the full performance of Disha Patani).”
Some fans took the abrupt broadcast cut light-heartedly others were quick to express their frustration. A netizen posted, “How Eden should’ve been looking when they robbed off us that full of Disha Patani performance,” accompanied with a fire image in the stadium stands. “Why did JioHotstar cut off #DishaPatani’s performance midway?? Such a disappointment,” questions a fan.
