The 20th annual “Love Your W” breast cancer awareness gala, presented by fashion magazine W Korea, was held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul on October 15. The event was attended by a lot of celebrities, including BTS members RM, J-Hope, and V, as well as other K-pop idols and public figures. Nevertheless, the gala was criticised since a large number of people viewed it as a celebrity party rather than a serious fundraising event for the cause of breast cancer awareness. The critic voiced their opinion on the lack of clear and effective communication regarding breast cancer at the event. They pointed to a watchful eye that the branding of the cause was done discreetly, with almost no mention in the event as well. Moreover, statistical data showed that under the campaign’s name, only 1.1 billion KRW (about 850,000 USD) had been raised; thus, questions of the event’s effectiveness were raised.

ARMY Responds with Global Donations
BTS’s devoted fanbase, ARMY, reacted to the whole situation with a different approach and took the right actions in the wake of the controversy. Support for breast cancer awareness was the main objective of the fans worldwide who organised and made donations to different breast cancer charities in their respective countries. Many of the fans who did so also shared their contributions on social media, thereby creating a ripple effect of participation and awareness-raising. The participation of ARMY in such a democratic manner proved again not only their commitment to the cause but also their power to make a difference through social movements.
korean celebrities literally sold their souls to the entertainment industry. they stand for absolutely NOTHING, can't speak up for social justice, feminist issues, genocide, they can't even call out the rise of fascism in their country. just puppets who sing, dance and act. https://t.co/eUYxrVvHJX

Korean celebs are so painfully shallow and empty. No real opinions, no thoughts of their own. No one here even mentioned breast cancer, which is laughable but not surprising. Most of these posers don’t even donate how has this event only raised 1.1 billion won in 20 years? https://t.co/uSxNTuZmCH

BTS’s Ongoing Support for Health Issues
BTS members RM, J-Hope, and V have never stopped taking advantage of their status to promote health-related issues, even when the event was not the best one. They appeared at the gala, which was one of the ways to make the public more aware of breast cancer and other health problems. The event was poorly carried out, but BTS’s participation highlighted their commitment to the support of vital causes and the use of their power for the good of society.

as a daughter of a woman with breast cancer, this gathering feels more like a mockery rather than an event meant to raise awareness.
