Barfi! was released in theaters on 12th September, 2012 with a silent protagonist in a mature storytelling that presented through visual poetry. Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Murphy the ‘Barfi’ Johnson was a hearing and speech-impaired man who was full of mischief and had a kind heart; he brought smiles, laughter, and tears, often within the same scene without saying even a word. The film’s strength lied in its simplicity that proved emotions could often be louder than words. Directed by Anurag Basu it also stars Ileana D’Cruz and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles with an ensemble supporting cast of Saswata Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta, Ashish Vidyarthi, Roopa Ganguly, Sourabh Shukla, and Haradhan Bandyopadhyay.
Katrina Kaif Was the First Choice!
Not many know that Katrina Kaif was initially considered for the part of Shruti Ghosh, which eventually went to Ileana D’Cruz who made her striking Bollywood debut with the movie. Destiny, it seems, played its own beautiful role as Ileana perfectly represented the grace and restraint that the character demanded. The chemistry between Ranbir, Priyanka, and Ileana added complexity to a storyline of love, acceptance, and the imperfect beauty of human connection.
An Ode to Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton
With the film Barfi!, Basu not only paid tribute to the silent film era legends but also created a whimsical world around the primary character who was mute and deaf – Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. The actor’s body language, expressions, and hijinks were heavily inspired by the great silent film comedians. He used the way they dressed with their habits (tilting of the hat, chasing after their ladies, etc.) to bring in the atmosphere of early cinema but still felt it was up-to-date and contemporary.
A U-Certificate Gem
Coincidentally, Barfi! went on to become Anurag’s first film ever to be granted a ‘U’ certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) – an indication of its broad appeal and wholesome storytelling.
With the overwhelming positive response from both the critics and the public, Barfi! resulted in a successful box-office venture as well as a recipient of several movie awards.
The Murphy Controversy
Nevertheless, the behind-the-scenes story was not all that smooth. The producers of Barfi! found themselves on the receiving end of a lawsuit from Murphy Enterprises, the owner of the famous ‘Murphy Radio,’ for the unauthorised use of their brand name in the film. It was a fleeting conflict that got some media attention, but it was not strong enough to eclipse the film’s tremendous artistic and audience success.
A Timeless Masterpiece
Barfi! is still a cinematically invaluable piece of art more than ten years later, telling about life’s imperfections and reminding people that love, laughter, and goodness transcend all barriers. Glamorous Ranbir Kapoor in a Chaplin & Keaton-like role, palatable Priyanka Chopra in a Jhilmil theatrics, and a nuanced portrayal of a layered character by Ileana D’Cruz, the film has convinced the world that it is one of the most emotionally captivating tales in Bollywood’s long history.
