A comparison of Dhanush’s character to Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal arose ever since the release of the trailer for Tere Ishk Mein and has increased the hype about the movie even more. The intense, rage-filled persona of Dhanush quickly became associated with the aggressive, toxic masculinity that was portrayed in Animal and even in earlier films like Kabir Singh. Viewers were able to see the similarities between the two films in terms of the atmosphere and the characters’ resorting to violence. However, the comparison did not remain a mere topic of discussion but became the very point of interest, which forced the filmmaker Aanand L. Rai to respond to the situation in a recent interview.
Aanand L. Rai Rejects Similarities in Themes
Amidst the rising debate, as per reports, Aanand L. Rai made it clear in a recent interview that, although the two films might depict anger and violence in a similar way, the comparisons are an oversimplification of his story. He regarded rage as merely “one ingredient, not the story itself,” and insisted that Tere Ishk Mein is not in the same narrative space as that of Animal. Rai further pointed out that Dhanush’s character is not characterized as an “alpha male,” a term often used to describe the heroes in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s films. Rather, the emotions of the character and his emotional sensitivity and heartbreak form the driving force and core element of the movie.
A Story Driven by Love, Vulnerability, and Heartbreak
The director has described the film Tere Ishk Mein as a tragic love story in its essence and a romantic drama. The plot revolves around a young man’s love for the character of Mukti, portrayed by Kriti Sanon. After the college days’ sweet romance, the story gets intense when Mukti picks a different guy and leaves the man’s (Dhanush’s) heart broken. His despair drives him downward, and he ends up taking drastic steps like the one when he dares to threaten, “Burn Delhi to ashes.” The scenes shown in the trailer are full of extreme rage, but Rai claims that they are signs of weakness and not toxic masculinity.
Rai and Dhanush’s Evolving Creative Bond
This movie is the third collaboration between Aanand L. Rai and Dhanush after Raanjhanaa and Atrangi Re. Rai openly valued Dhanush, stating that Dhanush has become “more than family” to him. He thinks this deep creative connection is a major factor in the presentation of difficult, emotionally charged characters. Drawing a parallel to Raanjhanaa, Rai portrayed Tere Ishk Mein as equally tragic, layered, and emotionally intense.
Production and Release Details

Rai, Himanshu Sharma, Bhushan Kumar, and Krishan Kumar, supported by T-Series and Colour Yellow Productions, is set to be released in theaters on November 28, 2025, in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
